Benefits Of Sauerkraut

sauerkraut benefits. Sauerkraut is known as a German food, but it was believed to be introduced to Germany from China. Captain James Cook discovered that one of the benefits of sauerkraut is that it prevented scurvy. In fact, on his 2nd trip around the world, Mr Cook packed his ships with 60 very large barrels of sauerkraut!

Used In Every Culture

How about the fact that it stores safely for months. We keep sauerkraut in the refrigerator, but before we had the use of electricity, every culture incorporated fermented foods in their diet. Fermenting food was the best way to keep them from spoiling or rotting.

Many different vegetables and meats were fermented, but cabbage was on of the main staples. Other fermented foods include yogurt, kefir, fermented beans, grains, fruit, honey, fish, and on and on. Without refrigeration, fermentation was very common in all cultures.

Did you know that sauerkraut is beneficial in that it has even more probiotics than yogurt? What is probiotics? It’s health bacteria. Most people know how yogurt is good for your digestive system… sauerkraut is even better.

Sauerkraut Benefits and Cancer

Worried about cancer? A study came out of Finland stating that fermented cabbage is even healthier than raw or cooked cabbage and is helpful in fighting or preventing cancer. Cancer is a scary word that no one wants to hear. It’s the second leading cause of death in the US… just behind heart attacks.

Given the right nutrients and proper rest our bodies have the ability to heal itself. We were indeed ‘wonderfully and fearfully made’. I have heard there there are cancer cells in all of our bodies. The trick is to keep the cancer from growing.

The compound isothiocyanates is produced by fermenting cabbage and this substance is what prevents the growth of cancer cells. I’ve always looked at food as having two options. What we eat either helps us, or hurts us. There is no neutral foods. Food is mean to be fuel for out bodies.
